The origin of the word lamp can be traced to Greece where the word lampas was used meaning torch. In Greece lamps were made of terracotta, this was long before the electric desk lamp came into picture. As fuel the terracotta lamps used oil. Till the end of the 18th century desk lamps primarily used oil as a fuel, they were usually in the form of a pot or a shell with a wick attached to it and used oil as a fuel. The oil burnt in desk lamps was usually obtained from whales, olives or nuts.

Desk lamps fueled by gas obtained from coal started appearing around the 1800s. From then on kerosene and petroleum oil became fuels for lamps. Desk lamps come in many shapes and sizes they can be simple desk lamps, led desk lamps, halogen desk lamps, fluorescent desk lamps or even magnifying desk lamps. Desk lamps though commonplace provide that much needed light to the workspace and you can choose what kind you want. They could be plain looking and utilitarian in nature or they could be ornate and provide some glamor to the writing desk. You could even go for some modernist desk lamps that could help you save electricity.
desk lampDepending on how much brightness a desk lamp emanates, it can build the mood for different kind of situations. If utilitarian in nature it would function as a great accessory for the business like desk where work is the main focus. If you are one of those who needs an attractive work space to build the mood or you are creatively inclined and ambiance is of prime importance try an ornate desk lamp that would look like an artistic piece on your desk.

A good source of light is necessary for you to do your work with ease. If you work a lot and the desk lamp is always switched on then it is necessary that you opt for a lamp that consumes less power and is sturdy as well, try using a halogen desk lamp. If you like soft silhouettes than opt for fluorescent desk lamps, children rooms are also a place where good lighting is necessary. They would need good lights to work well. Try opting for cost effective desk lamps that not just provide enough light but save on energy costs. A well lighted desk can be achieved by a magnifying desk lamp or a halogen desk lamp. As far as children desks are concerned avoid something too fancy or a desk lamp made of glass. A plain looking desk lamp or maybe a bright one, especially if the kids are below 10 years of age would be quite suitable.

Another feature that you should look for in desk lamps is that they should be light in weight and easy to carry if you intend to change the location of your work desk or the childs study table. The lamp should be adjustable so that you can bend or turn the bulb unit to focus on your work.

One advantage with desk lamps is that they occupy very little space so they can be very easily be placed anywhere on the desk. You could even have a wall mounted desk lamp. You don’t require too much wiring to fit a desk lamp. Look for lamps that have toggle switches as that makes them easy to be switched on or off particularly if you work late and tend to fall asleep at your desk.

Some latest desk lamps are touch sensitive, instead of a big switch that makes it easier to operate. Of course the touch sensitive feature has to be handled delicately or it will stop working very soon. This feature is convenient to switch on especially in the dark as searching for the switch in the dark can be quite tiresome.

Dimmer switches in desk lamps give you the option of adjusting the brightness of the lamp. You can increase or decrease the brightness depending on what you are doing. If you are reading or writing keep the light bright and if you just want to relax or leave the room keep the light dim. Use of desk lamps can be great especially for your eyes or your children’s eyes as by making use of a desk lamp your work area is well lighted and you don’t need to strain your eyes.
